For the Scotch whisky industry, the past few years have felt like an ageing spirit in unpredictable weather – resilient, patient but under pressure.
Tariffs, rising costs, global uncertainty and shifting export conditions have all created challenges for one of Scotland’s most iconic (and important) industries. So, ahead of World Whisky Day, there is finally a reason to raise a dram.
In April, the President of the United States of America announced the removal of tariffs on Scotch whisky entering the US. This is a move that is very welcomed across the industry and described as a “significant boost” for distillers and exporters alike.
And for an industry built on heritage, tradition and craftsmanship (not to mention international demand and reputation), it matters more than most!
Why The Tariff Removal Matters
The US remains the most valuable export market for Scotch whisky globally. When tariffs were introduced, the impact was immediate. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) reported export volumes to the US fell by 15% following the measures introduced in 2025.
According to SWA, tariffs has been costing the industry around £4million every single week in lost exports.
Mark Kent, Chief Executive of the SWA, said:
“The deal is a significant boost for the Scotch whisky industry in our most valuable export market…”
He added:
“The special relationship that the Scotch whisky and American whiskey industries share will be reinvigorated.”
Scotch whisky and American bourbon industries are deeply connected. From shared consumers and tourism to the ongoing trade of oak barrels between Kentucky and Scotland. In many ways, they support each other’s ecosystems.
So, while the headlines focus on tariffs, the wider impact is about confidence returning to the industry that supports thousands of jobs, exports globally, and remains one of the strongest symbols of Scottish craftsmanship.
The Deeper Meaning of Whisky

Whisky has always been more than just a drink. It represents something much deeper: culture; craftsmanship; storytelling; tourism; gifting (to name a few.)
The modern whisky market is no longer driven by liquid alone. Consumers buy into provenance, authenticity, collectability, sustainability, and presentation just as much as the delicious taste of their flavour profiles.
That’s especially true in export markets like the US, where shelf presence and perceived value can heavily influence buying decisions. And that’s where packaging quietly becomes one of the most important parts of the entire journey.
Packaging’s Role in Whisky Growth
As whisky brands continue expanding internationally again, packaging will once again sit at the centre of differentiation. For whiskies, especially premium whiskies, their packaging is rarely just “protective.”
Packaging plays a much bigger role, such as:
- First impression on shelf
- A signal of craftsmanship and quality
- A storytelling tool
- A collector’s piece
- Part of the gifting experience
- A reflection of the brand’s heritage and values
Whether it’s rigid boxes for limited editions, folding boxboard cartons for retail scalability and gifting, or sustainable materials designed for modern consumers, packaging plays a critical role in helping whisky brands compete globally.
At Clyde Presentation Packaging, we’ve seen first-hand how the whisky industry continues to evolve over time. Balancing tradition with innovation, while still protecting the authenticity that makes Scotch so respected worldwide.
After a difficult period for international trade, this year’s World Whisky Day feels like an opportunity to celebrate optimism returning to the industry – not just for distillers, but for everyone connected to whisky. From suppliers and designers, to bottlers, retailers, exporters and packaging partners. We are toasting them all.
