International Whiskey Day: A World of Craft, Culture and Packaging

Whiskey-Warehouse-768x512

Every year on 27th March, whisk(e)y lovers around the world raise a glass to celebrate International Whisk(e)y Day – a global nod to one of the most diverse and culturally rich spirits on the planet.

The day was started by a group of whiskey writers in 2008, with one of those writers being British writer Michael Jackson. It falls on this day to honour Jackson’s birthday.

Whisky isn’t just about what’s in the glass anymore – it’s about where it comes from, how it’s made, and increasingly, how it’s presented.

This is a category built on heritage, innovation and storytelling, so packaging is no longer an afterthought but part of the experience.

A Global Spirit, Defined by Place

Whisky may have its roots in Scotland and Ireland, but today it’s a truly global category (produced in over 100 countries worldwide) and each region brings something different to the table.

Scotland – Heritage & Complexity

Clyde Presentation Packaging, Glenallachie 30 Year Old Luxury Packaging

Scotland has 152 operating Scotch whisky distilleries (SWA, June 2025), making it one of the most densely packed spirits-producing countries in the world. As of 2022, Scotch production equated to 1.23 billion litres and 22 million casks lie maturing across Scotland – showing the enormous scale of the industry.

Still considered the gold standard, largely due to its deep-rooted traditions and strict regulations. From peated malts on Islay, to lighter, fruit-forward Speyside expressions, Scotland’s regional diversity is unmatched.

Maturation plays a big role within Scotch, often in ex-Bourbon or sherry casks. Time shapes complexity and depth.

What sets Scotch apart:

  • Strong sense of place (terrior)
  • Lond ageing processes
  • Protected production methods.

An incredible 43 bottles of Scotch whisky are exported every second to more than 160 markets worldwide, totalling over 1.3 billion bottles annually, accounting for 22% of all UK food and drink exports. A remarkable share for a single category.

Ireland – Smooth & Approachable

Irish whisky was undergone a huge resurgence over the past decade. In the late 1800s, Ireland had over 80 distilleries. By the late 1980s, that number dropped to just 2 operational distilleries. It’s one of the biggest industry collapses and comebacks in spirts history!

Today, there are 40+ distilleries across the country. Irish whiskey is one of the fastest-growing premium spirits globally with exports increasing by over 300% since the early 2000s, and is shipped to 130 countries worldwide.

Traditionally triple-distilled, it’s known for being smoother and more approachable making it ideal for both newcomers and seasoned whiskey drinkers. New distilleries are now blending tradition with innovation, experimenting with casks and finishes while leaning heavily into storytelling and provenance.

What sets it apart:

  • Smooth, accessible flavour profile
  • Rapid growth and innovation

Irish whiskey’s revival has created a unique dynamic – a category rooted in heritage, but driven by new brands that need to build recognition quickly.

England – Innovation & Momentum

English whisky is one of the fastest-growing categories in the global spirits market. Once a minor player, England now has over 50 active distilleries, with many more in development — a remarkable rise in just over a decade.

English whisky distilleries collectively produce around 3.5 million litres of pure alcohol annually. This is a boutique, premium-leaning category.

Freed from some of the historic constraints seen in more established regions, English distillers are embracing experimentation, from grain selection to cask types and climate-driven maturation.

The result is a category that feels modern, agile, and creatively driven.

What sets it apart:

  • Rapid growth and new distillery openings
  • Experimental approach to production
  • Strong focus on brand identity and design

Unlike traditional whisky markets built on centuries of heritage, English whisky is being built in real time – meaning brands must rely more heavily on packaging, design, and storytelling to establish credibility and stand out.

Welsh – Craft, Heritage & Identity

Welsh whiskey may be smaller in scale, but it’s rich in identity and growing steadily in recognition. Historically, whisky was produced in Wales as far back as the 19th century, but the category disappeared for over a century before being revived in the early 2000s.

Today, Wales is home to a handful of distilleries, with producers like Penderyn leading the way and putting Welsh whisky firmly on the global map and Aber Falls. Despite there only being around 10 active distilleries, it has a strong global ambition and exported to 40+ countries worldwide.

What makes Welsh whisky particularly interesting is its blend of Celtic heritage and modern craft — often using unique distillation techniques and cask finishes to create distinctive flavour profiles.

What sets it apart:

  • Small-scale, craft-led production
  • Strong national identity and heritage
  • Distinctive house styles and experimentation

While production volumes remain relatively low, Welsh whisky has gained international recognition and awards, helping to position it as a premium, craft-driven category.

USA – Bold & Characteristic

With over 2,600 distilleries (and growing), the US produces over 25 million 9-litre cases of American whiskey annually. The exports exceed $1.4 billion annually, and Bourbon alone accounts for 95% of the world’s supply!

Bourbon and rye whiskies bring sweetness, spice and a distinctively American identity. The regulations (like the requirement for new charred oak barrels) and a bold, confident flavour profile, are definitions of American whiskey.

There’s also a strong culture of experimentation, from small-batch releases to flavoured and finished expressions.

What sets it spart:

  • Sweet, rich flavour profiles (especially Bourbon)
  • Strong legal definitions
  • High-impact branding.

Japan – Precision & Craft

Japanese whisky has earned global respect for its meticulous approach to production. Across the country, there are currently 30-40 active distilleries, with new entrants increasing in recent years. However, demand has consistently outstripped supply, particularly in export markets.

Inspired by Scotch traditions but refined through a lens of precision and balance, the focus is on harmony (both in flavour and presentation).

Even small details, from water sources to blending techniques, are carefully controlled.

What sets it apart:

  • Attention to detail
  • Balanced, elegant flavour profiles
  • Craft-led philosophy.

Japanese whisky sits firmly in the ultra-premium space, where scarcity, craftsmanship, and reputation drive desirability.

Canada – Light & Versatile

Canadian whisky is often lighter and smoother, typically made using blending techniques that create a consistent and approachable product. Currently, Canada produces over 100 million litres of whisky annually, with around 80% exported, primarily to the US (but also 150+ countries globally.)

It’s a category built on versatility, equally suited to sipping for mixing, which has helped it maintain steady global demand.

What sets it apart:

  • Blended production methods
  • Light, smooth character
  • Broad appeal.

Canadian whisky is built on consistency and scalability — making it a reliable global player rather than a disruptive one.

The Rise of New World Whiskey

Talk to anyone within the field, and they’ll tell you that a very exciting development is the rise of emerging whisky nations. From Australia and England to New Zealand and beyond, distilleries across the globe are experimenting with:

  • Alternative grains
  • New yeast strains
  • Native woods and cask finishes

Free from tradition and some regulations, these producers are pushing boundaries and redefining what whisky can be.

And for us, we believe that with new innovations, comes new opportunities…

Why Packaging Matters More Than Ever

Walk into any retailer or scroll an online store, you can see immediately how competitive the whisky category is.

What separates one bottle from another? Often, it’s not just age, origin, cask maturation types – it’s how the brand shows up on the shelf (and virtual shelf.)

Packaging now plays a critical role in:

  • Communicating provenance and authenticity
  • Justifying premium price points
  • Creating gifting appeal
  • Building brand recognition in crowded markets

Whisky deserves (and needs) packaging that does it justice in order to stand out.
